This is part 4 of the “How to Afford Everything Series”

If you joining for the first time, please go back and listen to the previous episodes so you can get all caught up and get to know me a little better.

You can watch this episode on YouTube HERE.

This episode is all about your career! Are you in the driver’s seat of your career? What is guiding you along the way? Stars? GPS? Directions from well-meaning friends and relatives who’ve been there? Are you on your way to a career or still just working a J-O-B?

Let’s find out!

Topic #1: Career vs. Job

Are you working on building your career or are you still slogging your way to a job every day?

Let’s discuss the differences between a “destination” career path and an “interesting assignment” career path.

Patti Poppe, the previous CEO of DTE, introduced me to the concept of a Destination career vs an interesting assignment.

Destination Career is working towards a specific company or job title, often with a clear educational or licensing path.

You may be on an interesting assignment career path if hiring managers ask what you want to be when you grow up. You have worked in 3 or more industries.

One is not better than the other BUT some extra care may be necessary in an interesting assignment career.

  • Think about transferable skills
  • Don’t forget about the value of your extracurriculars and hobbies

If you’re not sure, this is a great time to do the career map exercise, the full worksheets are in the book and available on my website.

Topic #2: Work Values

Values are basic and fundamental beliefs that guide or motivate attitudes or actions. They help us to determine what is important to us. People’s values tend to change over time.

On my website and in the book, I have an awesome exercise that helps you assess your values. In doing that you might figure out that your favorite job tapped into your sense of adventure, or the job you hated didn’t give you the time and space to think critically about the work you were doing. Do yourself a favor, go to darlabishop.com, find the worksheets, and do the career map and values worksheet.

Before we go onto the next topic, I just want to remind you that you can order my book, which includes many, many helpful worksheets to help you figure all this stuff out. Including a Work Values Assessment, which are going to talk about next.

Visit my website and order your book today HERE.

Topic #3: Navigating the Financial Job Hunt

Let’s say you’re looking for a job right now. If I’m honest, I’m always looking for a job, not because I’m unhappy but because I like to see trends in my industry in terms of skills, salaries, and org structures. This also allows me to share cool jobs with cool people in my personal and professional networks who may be looking for their next great job.

Let’s say you’re looking for a job. What’s the first thing you need? You might say resume, but honey, you need to know your #. If you don’t know what it costs you to live (throwback to episode 1 of this series), you are almost guaranteed to miss out on some money.

Understanding your finances is a critical part of your job search.

Do you have any major changes coming up you need to build savings for?

Are you working on your debt?

Are you just tired of feeling broke all the time?

If you don’t know your numbers, you might just take another job or assignment that doesn’t help you with your goals.

So, Financial ninjas, thank you for listening to episode four of the How to Afford Everything series with Finan_Sis. I really hope you are feeling motivated and hungry for more. Stay tuned for the next episode, Personal Growth, and the most common questions about money management.
